Nintendo DSi White
![]() |
The new Nintendo DSi White has all the features of the DS Lite and some quirky ones too. New additions include the two motion-detecting cameras, the ability to download content and you can also play your favourite music via SD cards. It also features a 12%slimmer design, larger screens and built-in Internet browsing.
The most noticeable feature of the slim Nintendo DSi White system are its two cameras - one camera is situated on the external body pointing away from the user, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open.
Another enhanced feature is the Nintendo DSi Console Sound application, which serves as an interactive voice recorder and music player that allows users to play with their music while they listen to it.
In the world of software, the Nintendo DSi Console will be the platform for the most relevant and fun on-the-go games and applications.
The DSi camera is only 0.3 MP, but that is enough for use on the console. There are some fun effects you can add too like Distortion Lens, Colour Pad, Mirror etc. The camera has face recognition for some effects, and there will be DSi exclusive games coming out in the future that use this feature.
Then there is the music player. It certainly offers a wide variety of fun ways to mess around with your music ... if you can find a converter to get it into the AAC format the player understands. It's a bit like splashing out on a printer and then finding that it only takes wacky paper sizes, found only in the middle of nowhere. How difficult would it have been to include an MP3 player, or even a CD Rom with conversion software to convert your MP3s or WMAs to the AAC format?
By far the biggest changes to the Nintendo DSi White, aside from the twin cameras, is the updated firmware and interface exclusive to the device. You won't be able to upgrade from the DS or DS Lite to the new DSi experience.
This new firmware includes various media and online applications that allow you to interact with photos and music. The new layout is very similar to that of the much loved Nintendo Wii, where different "channels" or applications can be scrolled through and moved around.
Nintendo DSi White Summary
The DSi White is a lovely unit but being a bloke it's not really my colour. To me it might as well be 'Pink'. Colour aside the White DSi is no different than the Black DSi and I'm sure if you got either as a present you'd be more than happy. Top quality games console and lots of new games on the way will make this a big seller for 2009. Make sure and get your hands on one before they sell out!
