Nintendo DSi Black
![]() |
The new Nintendo DSi Black has all the features of the DS Lite and some quirky ones too. New additions include the two motion-detecting cameras, the ability to download content and you can also play your favourite music via SD cards. It also features a 12%slimmer design, larger screens and built-in Internet browsing.
The two back-lit LCD screens offer groundbreaking gameplay advances. Each screen can reproduce a true quality 3D view, with impressive 3D renderings. The lower screen offers the usual touch-screen capabilities so you no longer rely on just buttons to move your character or shift perspectives.
The biggest hardware changes to the DSi are the addition of two integrated cameras, an integrated SD slot, enlarging the screens by 0.25", expanded RAM, and the removal of the much beloved GameBoy Advance cartridge slot.
In the world of software, Nintendo DSi Console will be the platform for the most relevant and fun on-the-go games and applications.
The DSi camera is only 0.3 MP, but that is enough for use on the console. There are some fun effects you can add too like Distortion Lens, Colour Pad, Mirror etc. The camera has face recognition for some effects, and there will be DSi exclusive games coming out in the future that use this feature.
As for web browsing, Opera is now a free download from the DSi Shop, but don't expect full web compatibility – it won't work with YouTube for a start. It's okay for occasional use but, like the DS Lite version, it's slow and fiddly.
Music playback is one of the Nintendo DSi's Black big new features, but inexplicably it won't play MP3s – it's AAC or nothing. Playback is harsh and digital-sounding, but you can have a bit of fun with its built-in effects and play-along instruments.
This new firmware includes various media and online applications that allow you to interact with photos and music. The new layout is very similar to that of the much loved Nintendo Wii, where different "channels" or applications can be scrolled through and moved around.
Nintendo DSi Black Summary
The DSi Black is a lovely unit to hold and will certaily wear very well. Put this games unit on top of your birthday or Xmas wish list and with the amount of great games you can play with it is sure to give you many years of fun. Big thumbs up for the matte black DSi.
